UKOUG 2008 – The Final Verdict of the Attendees

Today, I got my evaluation results for my presentation during UKOUG this year. Again, I matched fy feelings regarding my perfomance given.  As said before, I am a little bit perfectionist minded, but for my second UKOUG conference presentation, I think I did well. Since my first presentation in 2007, I think I really improved my presentation skills over the last year.

Overall UKOUG Event Averages for 2008:

  • Topic= 4.46,
  • Content= 4.31,
  • Presentation Skills= 4.40,
  • Quality of Slides= 4.20,
  • Value= 4.26

If I remember correctly then my scores were in 2007 approximately more than 0.5 points below the averages of 2007. This year I  did on average far better than that, which matches my feelings after I had my presentation (if it would have been dark, I probably would have been given light in the dark 😉 )

My conclusion…

UKOUG 2008 was all about “last call”. I didn’t have really have the time to prep myself on time, so I had to do much of it on Monday, the day before my actual presentation. Because I really didn’t want to go short on time like in 2007, I made sure I had enough material.

I learned during this last year that if you aren’t a native speaker, that you will stick to the story and therefor your presentation won’t get filled up with (my) the usual war time stories which make a presentation more enjoyable.

Although I hadn’t have time to test the timing of my presentation, normally I try to do a test run on a home audience, and I took the chance that I would be short in time, on average it was better that the year before were I finished up after 30 minutes of my 45 minutes presentation slot. One of the scoreing comments afterwards confirmed my beliefs:

“Need to work on timing;Unfortunately Marco ran out of time but it was very good nevertheless.”

Nethertheless…

I remember that in 2007, when I had the time to peak the scores on the evaluation forms, there were roundabout 10% “below average” and 10% “excellent” scores. Although they probably leveled eachother out, I don’t think they represented my presentation scores at that time. I haven’t had the chance this year to peak at those scores again, but my believe is that this year the scores have been more balanced. For me this is reason to believe that I am on the right track.

Dimitri who was in the audience also mentioned me in one of his blogposts so I must have been doing something right…

As Doug said it, it was noticable that I did a good job, because I was smiling the rest of the days during UKOUG 2008…
