A Musical Strawl Through YouTube

My wife is Greek. Somehow it happened that on this Saterday four greek women gathered in the living room; because my Greek isn’t that good yet, I withdrew. In the new kitchen we just build, I put my laptop on the counter and started crawling the web. Lately a new hobby of mine – scrolling through YouTube music sections. Strawling from one emotion or connection to another. The list downhere was my Saterday night adventure through musical time…

Gentle Giant. You love it or you don’t. I guess, in its time, it was completely different from its colleague musicians regarding musical theme and rythm…

I also wanted to check if there was something from Patrick Moraz. He played in Yes and did a nice job on an old album called “The Story of I“. From time to time, I play a little bit on keyboards, so I am always focused on keyboard players. I ended up with a clip that included one off my old time favourite musicians Bill Bruford.

  • Patrick Moraz – Bill Bruford Duo

Bill Bruford (but I am no drummer), is the best drummer I ever heard. I always try to keep up with his musical adventures, because he is involved in very interesting bands or temporary groups. Regarding Bruford, as one of the commentators on YouTube put it: “Holy shit, 17/16 over a 4/4 pattern?! This guys fucking insane”.

Two of my old time favourite albums have Bill involved: “One of a kind” – Bill Bruford and “UK” from UK. I hope I will have the chance to see him at one of his drum clinics he sometimes gives…

  • Bill Bruford and the Beat – Part 3

Bill has played in a lot of impressive bands, one of them is Genesis. I am a Genesis fan for a long time, but my favourites are the ones where Phil just drums and nothing else… My neighbour Erwin went with me to a gig of Genesis in the Amsterdam Arena and every time he pointed out the old songs of the Genesis Peter Gabriel era (before 1980). He didn’t know the Genesis songs, at least only the standard ones from the radio, I found this very typical, but then again those songs have “classical” written all over them.

Three (or already four?) years ago, I was lucky to see Peter Gabriel. One of my favourites on his last (?) album UP is “Signal to Noise”. I was a little disapointed because the live version wasn’t as powerfull as the one on the album. The show in Ahoy Rotterdam, was amazing though…

For years a bold guy called Tony Levin is joining Peter on his tours. What Bill Bruford for me is on drums; Tony does it on bass (/ Chapman Stick ). Despite all his session acts, he also has a band, conveniently called “The Tony Levin Band”. Tony has also a session list on his name, that is awesome. Surfing YouTube, I also stumbled upon an interesting link to a gathering with Jon Anderson (Yes) playing “Heart of the Sunrise”.

I and my nephew Chris (handy with a guitar) saw the Tony Levin Band two years ago during a gig in Zaandam. Tom Griesgraber was playing before the main event of the evening. Seeing the stick in action, played by a craftsmen like Tom, was a delight. Chris was amazed. If we had the money, we probably had ordered a Chapman Stick on the spot.

The ladies went to bed. So maybe it is also time for me. I hope you enjoy the links…

PS. Before you ask – Yep I like more than progressive rock but thats for another time.

Funny, also my keyboard (ehh one of them) is on YouTube. I once bought it straight from the internet (it has still number 176 on it), a Korg Triton Pro…

Achhh, just some extra to finish (can’t sleep anyway)…

  • Liquid Tension Experiment (Live) – Paradigm Shift
  • Jean Luc Ponty – Live
  • Rick Wakeman Solo (with Jon Anderson, Yes)
  • The Smiths – Bigmouth Strikes Again
  • Radiohead – Street Spirit (Fade Out)
